CRA Compliance Letter Campaign

CRA Compliance Letter Campaign

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will soon be conducting a compliance letter campaign.

The CRA included the following in an information notice it distributed on December 12, 2016: Compliance letter campaign — Message to GST/ HST registrants In December 2016, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will conduct a GST/HST compliance letter campaign pilot project. The CRA will send 250 letters in December followed by 250 in February, 2,500 in May, and 2,500 in August to GST/HST registrants. Those receiving a letter will be asked to review a previously submitted GST/HST return with suspected errors and confirm whether the amounts they reported are correct or need to be changed. The campaign supports the CRA’s increased emphasis on helping individuals and small businesses to better understand their tax obligations and encourages them to correct any errors in their past GST/HST returns. This increased understanding of tax obligations will also serve in promoting compliance going forward.

In 2010, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) began a letter campaign to inform selected taxpayers about their tax obligations and to encourage them to correct any inaccuracies in their past income tax and benefit returns.

These educational letters are being mailed to individuals in selected activity groups where taxpayers are at risk of misunderstanding their tax obligations.

There are two types of educational letters the CRA might send to selected taxpayers: one to educate them about specific claims made on their returns, and another to educate and notify them that the CRA may conduct an audit in their activity group.

As part of the seventh year of this campaign, the CRA will be sending approximately 30,000 letters to selected taxpayers in early 2016.
